Game Day Above Federal Heights Starts Hours Before Kickoff

October 15, 2026

When does a Utes home game actually begin, if you live a few blocks from Rice-Eccles Stadium? The ticket says 8:15 p.m. for Saturday's game against Kansas. The parking lots tell a different story.

Utah has four regular-season home dates left in 2026. Kansas comes on Saturday, October 10, Houston on October 24, BYU on November 7, and West Virginia on Friday, November 27. Every one of them lands on the same hill as the Natural History Museum of Utah and Red Butte Garden, and both are in the middle of their fall calendars. The useful question for a Federal Heights household is when each piece of the stadium's day switches on, and what else is open on the hill at that hour.

The stadium's day opens in stages

Utah Athletics' game-week guide for the Kansas White Out sets out the order. Signature and tailgate lots open at 6 a.m. The rest of the parking lots open five hours before kickoff. On an 8:15 p.m. game, general parking opens around 3:15 p.m., and tailgaters have been on site since early morning.

Fans can buy day-of passes on arrival in Lots 27, 32, 39 and 46. Prices for the Kansas game run from $52 to $103 per game on the official Utah Athletics parking page. Lots 27, 28, 29, 30, 32, 39, 43, 44 and 46 cost $52, Lots 15, 17, 19 and 20 cost $77, and Lot 18 costs $103.

One change this season matters for anyone who drives Wasatch Drive. ADA parking and the ADA shuttle stop have moved from Lot 14 to Lot 27, off Wasatch Drive north of the Eccles Broadcast Center. The game shuttle now runs from that lot.

The University's own Commuter Services guidance, published October 1, names the roads that back up:

"Traffic volumes increase significantly before and after major events, especially around Rice-Eccles Stadium, South Campus Drive, Foothill Drive, and surrounding campus roadways."

The same guidance calls football game days the biggest transportation event on campus, with parking operations and road closures affecting drivers and pedestrians "throughout the day." That phrase lines up with the staged openings. The game is in the evening, but its traffic runs all day.

The two neighbors on a regular schedule

Neither Red Butte Garden nor NHMU had posted game-specific closures or changed hours on the pages reviewed this week. Both are running their normal fall schedules. From October through December, Red Butte Garden is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily unless otherwise noted. NHMU is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, with last admission at 4:30 p.m.

Line those hours up against the stadium clock and the overlap is easy to see. On an 8:15 kickoff, general lots open at about 3:15 p.m., and the garden and museum don't close until 5. For roughly an hour and three-quarters, three crowds share the same few roads. The morning hours are a different matter. The tailgate lots are active, but the general lots haven't opened yet.

Parking is the other thing to know. NHMU's Rio Tinto Center has two surface-parking levels next to the building. When those fill, the museum sends visitors to overflow parking by sign or attendant, and to street parking on Colorow Road. Red Butte Garden's main entrance is the Visitor Center at 300 Wakara Way, with extra parking at the Williams Building garage, 295 Chipeta Way. The garden's free campus shuttle runs Monday through Friday only. For evenings and weekends, the garden suggests walking from the University South Campus or Fort Douglas TRAX stations.

Those are also the stations football fans use. UTA treats every 2026 University of Utah on-campus sporting-event ticket as fare, with Red Line access at the Stadium and Fort Douglas stations. On a home weekend, a garden visitor on TRAX is sharing the train with fans who rode in free.

What each remaining home weekend overlaps

Date Game Kickoff as of Oct. 7 Also on the hill that weekend
Sat., Oct. 10 Kansas, White Out 8:15 p.m. NHMU Indigenous Art Market & Festival, Oct. 10–11
Sat., Oct. 24 No. 22 Houston Not yet announced Red Butte Garden's Garden After Dark, Oct. 15–30
Sat., Nov. 7 No. 8 BYU Not yet announced Fall Orchid Show, Nov. 7–8, and Glass in the Garden, open since Nov. 6
Fri., Nov. 27 West Virginia 7 p.m. Glass in the Garden, running through Dec. 20

October 10: the art market and the White Out on one Saturday

This Saturday is the clearest example of the overlap. NHMU's Indigenous Art Market & Festival runs October 10 and 11 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with 39 artists representing 12 tribes. Market access comes with regular museum admission, and members get in at 9 a.m. Kansas kicks off at 8:15 p.m. on ESPN. Here is how the published hours fall:

  1. 6 a.m. Signature and tailgate lots open.
  2. 9 a.m. NHMU members' early access to the art market. Red Butte Garden opens at the same hour.
  3. 10 a.m. The art market opens to all museum visitors.
  4. About 3:15 p.m. General game-day lots open, five hours before kickoff.
  5. 4:30 p.m. Last admission at NHMU.
  6. 5 p.m. The art market, the museum and the garden all close.
  7. 8:15 p.m. Kickoff.

Sunday, October 11, has the same market hours and no home game.

Houston and BYU are still waiting on a kickoff time

Two of the remaining home dates don't have kickoff times yet, so the timeline above can't be built for them. Utah's May announcement said kickoff times and TV selections for the remaining regular-season games would come 12 or six days before each game. For Houston on October 24, that puts the announcement on October 12 or October 18. For BYU on November 7, it would be October 26 or November 1. The live Utah football schedule still showed both times blank on October 7.

The kickoff time matters more than usual on Houston weekend, because Red Butte Garden is open after dark that week. Garden After Dark: Adventures in Neverland runs October 15 through 30. Hours are 6 to 8 p.m. on weeknights and 6 to 9 p.m. on weekends, with an all-abilities hour from 5 to 6 p.m. on weekends. If Houston gets an evening kickoff, the game and the garden event would be running at the same time on October 24, with general lots opening five hours earlier. A daytime kickoff would put most of the game traffic before the garden's evening hours. Until the time is posted, either is possible.

BYU weekend has more going on during the day. Glass in the Garden opens November 6 and runs through December 20. The Fall Orchid Show runs November 7 and 8, and Saturday the 7th is game day. Sunday the 8th has the orchids and no home game.

Thanksgiving Friday has its own schedule

West Virginia kicks off at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 27, the day after Thanksgiving. Five hours before kickoff puts general lot openings around 2 p.m. It is also the only remaining home game on a weekday. The garden's free campus shuttle runs Monday through Friday, so it could be an option that day, where it isn't on the Saturdays. Glass in the Garden will still be on display.

What isn't settled yet

Some things the published sources don't confirm, so they aren't claimed here. A search of Salt Lake City's residential permit parking page found no football-specific rule for Federal Heights streets. Restrictions there follow the posted signs for each permit area. The city's Foothill Drive safety project is planned for the intersections at Westminster Avenue, Laurelhurst Drive, 2600 East and 2500 East/Blaine Avenue. Its latest posted update, from June 2026, only said construction was expected to start in summer, and it gave no fall progress report. The Commuter Services guidance says the University publishes large-event parking maps and recommends checking them before each event, since lot closures change with the size of the event.
